{DATE}

Dear {NAME OF LOCAL MP} MP

My family and I are residents of {TOWN/CITY/LOCATION}  within your constituency. With time we grow increasingly aware that we and our generation are responsible for putting future generations in serious peril. We are therefore writing to ask you to do all in your power to avert the worst effects of catastrophic climate change.

We believe we have already witnessed the first effects of climate change first hand – records of extreme temperatures broken each year, extreme weather events here in the UK and elsewhere across the globe, unprecedented increases in life threatening heatwaves and wildfires. We find the evidence presented by current mainstream climate science on this issue compelling and feel that for anyone who has taken the time to investigate the issue there can be little, if any doubt at all that catastrophic climate change will be the result of the current trajectory of our behaviour – unless we make significant changes very swiftly.

As a family we are doing what we can to reduce our own carbon footprint. But doing this is proving to be a much more complicated, time consuming and expensive to achieve than it should be. It is also an almost completely meaningless exercise unless there is a significant shift in attitudes more widely and huge changes to infrastructure are made nationally and internationally.

We are therefore asking you as our local MP to do everything in your power now to legislate for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in the UK over the next 5 years.

The government’s Net Zero Strategy published Oct 2021 was definitely a step in the right direction and we urge you to do everything in your power to convince other governments around the world to take the actions necessary to avert the worst effects of Climate Change.

However, the current UK Net Zero Strategy is extremely ‘high level’ and falls very short on detail and the delivery of very real and very substantial cuts in greenhouse gas emissions we need very urgently. What is desperately urgently needed now are the many strong, practical policies, initiatives and funding required to make a meaningful difference in practice. Not least because the UK Net Zero Strategy places great optimism and huge faith in the very speedy roll-out of large-scale technological solutions in many key areas to solve the problem – many of which are currently only in their infancy or barely exist at all.

Our appeal to you as our elected representative is therefore to do everything in your power to bring forward all the practical meaningful policies, initiatives and funding needed to make the UK Net Zero Strategy work in practice and ensure the target of net zero emissions is met well before 2050.

It is reassuring to see in the very succinct summary ‘What is net zero and why do we need to act’ on page 14 of the UK Net Zero Strategy that global warming is acknowledged as a reality and the prospect of catastrophic climate change requires urgent action if it is to be avoided.

However, it is much less reassuring that it has taken until now to put any sort of comprehensive strategy in place when the mainstream science behind it has been clear for many years. Much valuable time has therefore been lost which needs to be made up and there is now no time for indecision, slip-ups or any kind of plan ‘B’. We are on the brink of an absolutely catastrophic disaster for our own children and grandchildren. Very real and very meaningful action therefore needs to be taken immediately to make up for lost time by drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions in the next 10 years.

Any reasonably informed understanding of the situation clearly indicates that every individual in the UK will need to reduce their carbon footprint very substantially and very quickly over the next few years if catastrophic climate change is to be avoided. However, in our experience there are still many many people who do not understand, or believe, or want to believe that we are in a Climate Emergency. Many still refer to Climate Change as some abstract concept, not something they need to worry about, something that someone else needs to deal with: are burying their heads in the sand, or hope it will simply go away. The only way this will change is if the truth is heard loud and clear from all those with power and influence, clearly and unambiguously.

The succinct summary ‘What is net zero and why do we need to act’ on page 14 of the UK Net Zero Strategy is clear, but in all likelihood relatively few people will read this document.

Our appeal to you therefore as a Member of Parliament is to speak the truth loudly, clearly and unambiguously in public about the Climate Emergency and the sacrifices that need to be made to enable our children and grandchildren to avoid having to deal with the worst effects of Catastrophic Climate Change within their lifetimes.

The current mainstream climate science consensus is that our own children will witness global warming well in excess of the 1.5C (the agreed as the maximum safe limit at Paris) in their own lifetimes if we do not act swiftly and decisively now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This means that sometime after you and I and the rest of our generation have gone, they will witness the start of the earths own unstoppable ‘feedback loops’, ever more extreme and damaging weather events, sea level rises, crop failures, mass migrations and all the upheavals, unrest and conflict these occurances will bring etc (all fully acknowledged on page 14 of your governments UK Net Zero Strategy).

We and our generation are the last with the ability to avert this crime against humanity, a crime against our very own children, grandchildren and subsequent generations of our own families.

We must not let this happen.

Please act now.

Yours Sincerely,
